Aphra Brandreth MP has visited Maggie's Wirral, where she met the dedicated team of staff who provide free advice and support to individuals diagnosed with cancer. Maggie's centres, known for their state-of-the-art architectural design, offer a warm and welcoming environment where anyone can drop in for a friendly chat over a cup of tea without an appointment.
During the visit, Aphra Brandreth MP was accompanied by her constituent, Bells Lewers from Handbridge, a terminally ill cancer patient, whom she had met during her summer surgery tour across the Chester South & Eddisbury constituency earlier this year. Together, they were shown around the facility and spoke with the team at Maggie's who are committed to offering expert care and compassionate support to those affected by cancer.
Kathy Wright, the Centre Head at Maggie's Wirral, commented:
"Maggie’s offers the best possible support free to anyone with cancer and their families who walk through our doors. You'll find our centres alongside NHS hospitals. In our team we have cancer support specialists who can answer questions about cancer, treatment and side effects, psychologists who provide psychological and emotional support, and benefits advisers who provide financial help. People do not need an appointment to visit Maggie's or a referral. You can just come in."
Aphra Brandreth MP praised the centre for its invaluable service to the community:
"Maggie's provides crucial support for people living with cancer and their families. The centre's open-door policy means that no one has to face their cancer journey alone. It's heartening to know that such an exceptional service exists for my constituents and the wider community. I was blown away by the support on offer at Maggie's, and I would recommend anybody affected by cancer, whether directly, or as a family member, to reach out to the amazing team on the Wirral."
Bells Lewers said:
"Maggie’s has been my lifeline over the last year. They have, quite simply, been utterly amazing. You can laugh or cry, talk or simply have a hug and a cup of tea, take part in seated yoga or Tai Chi, knit & natter, or drum your frustrations away. Though I have an amazing group of family and friends, I have also been able to have counselling to talk about the fears that I don’t want to burden my support group with. And without Maggie’s guidance and professional support, I couldn’t have navigated my way through the bewildering complexities of the benefits system – a staggeringly stressful process. Initially, I struggled to walk through their doors, worried that it would just underline my condition: I’m so glad I did. It has been a complete haven."
